Update the Printer's Software (Firmware)

Note

  • Software installation begins several minutes after you submit the software to the printer.
  • When installation begins, the Embedded Web Server is disabled.
  • You can monitor the installation progress from the printer control panel.
  • When the installation completes, the printer restarts and prints a Software Upgrade Report.

You can update your printer when Xerox releases a new version of printer software or firmware. Before you download and install new software, perform the following:

  1. Determine the current software version installed on your printer.
  2. Enable upgrades.
  3. Update the printer software.
  4. Firmware verification.

Checking the Software Version

You can update your printer when Xerox releases a new version of printer software or firmware. Before you download and install new software, determine the current software version installed on your printer.

To determine the firmware version from the Embedded Web Server:

  1. In the Embedded Web Server, click System.
  2. Click Software Update.
  3. For Current Version, make note of the version number.

To determine the firmware version at the printer control panel:

  1. At the printer control panel, press the Home button.
  2. Touch Device, then Software Update.
  3. For Current Version, make note of the version number

Enabling Upgrades

  1. In the Embedded Web Server, log in as administrator. See the Related Content for additional information.
  2. Click System, then Software Update.
  3. In the Software Update area, click Enable.

Four Methods for Upgrading the Printer Software / Firmware

WARNING: It is highly recommended to consult with your Network or System Administrator before performing any software (firmware) update. Some updates may cause the printer to become non-compliant and cease to work as intended with the environment in which it is installed.

There are four methods for upgrading the printer firmware, which are listed below.

  • For network connected devices, Xerox recommends using Method 1 (Automatic Update with Remote Services)
  • For devices connected via a USB cable, Xerox recommends using Method 3 (Manual Update using theFirmware Update Tool)

The four methods for upgrading firmware are:

  1. Automatically update with Remote Services.
  2. Manually update by downloading the .bin file and update in the Embedded Web Server.
  3. Manually update by downloading the Firmware Update Tool and the firmware .bin file, and perform the update manually.
  4. Manually search for updates at the printer control panel.
  5. Install software after a software update notification.

Method 1: Automatically update with Remote Services

WARNING: It is highly recommended to consult with your Network or System Administrator before performing any software (firmware) update. Some updates may cause the printer to become non-compliant and cease to work as intended with the environment in which it is installed.

  1. In the Embedded Web Server, log in as administrator. See the Related Content for additional information.
  2. Click System, then Software Update.
  3. Check that Software updates are enabled. If not, click Enable to enable them.
  4. Click Check Now.
  5. Click Install Now.

    NOTE: The message "Please Wait…" may be displayed for several minutes.

  6. Click Agree to accept the license agreement.

    NOTE: It may take up to 15 minutes for the firmware upgrade to complete. When the upgrade is complete, the printer will reboot automatically.

  7. Check the software version (see above) to ensure the update was successful.

Method 2:Manually update by downloading the .bin file and update in the Embedded Web Server

WARNING: It is highly recommended to consult with your Network or System Administrator before performing any software (firmware) update. Some updates may cause the printer to become non-compliant and cease to work as intended with the environment in which it is installed.

NOTE: The following solution requires firmware version XX.10.41 or later.

  1. Download the latest firmware general release file from the Drivers and Downloads page. See the Related Content for additional information.
  2. Extract the general release firmware .zip file and save the firmware general release .bin file to a known location.
  3. Log in to the Embedded Web Server as administrator. See the Related Content for additional information.
  4. Click System, then Software Update.
  5. Find the section named Update with File Specified, then click Select.
  6. Browse to the file location where the previously downloaded *.bin file has been saved to in step 2 and select it.
  7. Click Open.
  8. Click Install Now.

    NOTE: The message “Please Wait…” may be displayed for several minutes.

  9. Click Agree to accept the license agreement.

    NOTE: It may take up to 15 minutes for the firmware upgrade to complete. When the upgrade is complete, the printer will reboot automatically.

  10. Check the software version (see above) to ensure the update was successful.

Method 3:Manually update by downloading the Firmware Update Tool and the firmware .bin file, and perform the update manually

WARNING: It is highly recommended to consult with your Network or System Administrator before performing any software (firmware) update. Some updates may cause the printer to become non-compliant and cease to work as intended with the environment in which it is installed.

  1. Download the Firmware Download Utility and the latest firmware general release .zip file from the Drivers and Downloads page. See the Related Content for additional information
  2. Extract the .zip file for the Firmware Download Utility and the .zip file for the firmware general release.
  3. Double-click the file named FWDLMgr.exe.
  4. At the prompt for the License Agreement, click Accept.
  5. Select the correct printer model from the Printer Model drop-down menu.
  6. Click Browse and navigate to the file location of the firmware .bin file that was previously downloaded.
  7. Click Add to assign the firmware to the printer.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Select the appropriate connection type, Network or USB, and click Next. For USB connections, skip to step 11.
  10. For Network connections only, type the printer’s IP address or Host Name or select Search From Network, then click Search.
  11. Click Next.

    NOTE: It may take up to 15 minutes for the firmware upgrade to complete. When the upgrade is complete, the printer will reboot automatically.

  12. Check the software version (see above) to ensure the update was successful.

Method 4: Installing and Configuring Software Updates from the Control Panel

You can use the printer control panel to check for software updates manually, or configure the device to check for updates automatically. You can set the frequency of the checks. If a software update is available, a notification appears on the control panel.

  1. At the printer control panel, press the Home button.
  2. Log in as administrator. See the Related Content for additional information.
  3. Touch Device > Software Update.
  4. To configure the device to check for software updates automatically, touch Check Automatically, then select an option.When a software update is detected, a notification appears on the device. The notification includes an option to install the software update.
  5. To check for software updates now, touch Check Now.
    • If no updates are available, touch Close.
    • If updates are available, touch the software that you want to install, then touch Install Now.

      NOTE: If Check Now fails, configure the Proxy Server and Remote Services features as needed by your network, or follow the instructions for updating the software using a different method.

Method 5: Installing Software after a Software Update Notification

WARNING: It is highly recommended to consult with your Network or System Administrator before performing any software (firmware) update. Some updates may cause the printer to become non-compliant and cease to work as intended with the environment in which it is installed.

When the device is set up to check for software updates automatically, if an update is found, a notification message appears. The software update can be installed from the notification screen.

To install the software after a Software Update Notification:

  1. At the printer control panel, press the Home button.
  2. Log in as administrator.
  3. Touch the Software Update Available notification banner, then do one of the following:
    • If the Install Now option is displayed:
      1. Touch Install Now.
      2. To confirm the installation, touch Continue.
      3. To agree to the software license agreement, touch Agree.
    • If only the Clear Notification option is displayed:
      1. Touch Clear Notification.
      2. Touch Device > Software Update.
      3. Touch Update Now.
      4. Touch Install Now.
      5. To confirm the installation, touch Continue.
      6. To agree to the software license agreement, touch Agree.
  4. The installation begins, and a status percentage appears.Do not power off the device. When the installation is complete, the device restarts, and a confirmation report prints.

 Enabling Firmware Verification

This feature is enabled by default. If it is disabled, you can configure the printer to ensure that all installed firmware files are certified properly for the device. To enable firmware verification:

  1. In the Embedded Web Server, log in as administrator. See the Related Content for additional information.
  2. Click System, then Security.
  3. In the Security area, click Firmware Verification.
  4. Select On, then click OK.
