Uninstall the Print Driver (Remove the Machine) From a Microsoft Windows XP / 2003 / Vista / 7 / 8 / 2008 / 2012 OS

    CAUTION: All pending print jobs must be deleted from the print queue prior to removing the printer. If necessary, contact your System Administrator for assistance.

    If the computer is connected to the printer via USB, disconnect the USB cable from the printer after all pending print jobs have been deleted before continuing with the steps below. Do not reconnect the USB cable to the printer until all of the steps below have been completed successfully.


  2. For Windows XP, 2003, and Vista, right-click on the printer to be removed and then click on [Delete]. A confirmation message will be displayed. Click on [Yes].

    For Windows 7 and 2008, right-click on the printer to be removed and then click on [Remove Device]. A confirmation message will be displayed. Click on [Yes].

    For Windows 8 and 2012:·        
    1. Open the desktop, move the mouse pointer to the top right corner of the screen to open the [Charms] bar, select [Settings] (gear icon) and then select the [Control Panel].
    2. Under the Hardware and Sound heading, select [View devices and printers]. If Hardware and Sound is not displayed, then select [Devices and Printers].
    3. Right-click on the printer to be removed and then click on [Remove Device]. A confirmation message will be displayed. Click on [Yes].

      NOTE: To delete the printer on a Windows Vista OS with User Access Control (UAC) enabled, right-click on the printer to be removed, select [Delete], select [Run as Administrator], and then click on [Continue].

  3. Open Server Properties:
    • For Windows XP and 2003, click on the File menu in the Printers and Faxes window, and then select [Server Properties]. The Server Properties window will be displayed. 
    • For Windows Vista, right-click anywhere inside of the Printer window to access Server Properties.
    • For Windows 7, 8, 2008, and 2012, select any remaining printer or fax icon under the Devices and Printers section, and then click on [Print Server Properties] in the menu bar at the top of the window.

      NOTE: For Windows Vista with UAC enabled, right-click anywhere inside the Printer window, select [Run as Administrator], and then click on [Continue].

  4. Click on the [Drivers] tab.
  5. For Windows 7, 8, 2008, and 2012, click on the [Change Driver Settings] button at the bottom of the window (if available).
  6. Delete the driver from the Drivers tab:
    • For Windows XP and 2003, select the print driver to be removed and then click on the [Remove] button. A confirmation message will be displayed. Click on [Yes].
    • For Windows Vista, 7, and 2008, select the driver to be removed and then click on the [Remove] button. A message will be displayed about removing the driver only or removing the driver and driver package. Select to remove the driver and driver package, and then click on [OK]. A confirmation message will be displayed. Click on [Yes]. A summary window will be displayed. Click on [Delete], and then click on [OK].

      NOTE: If the files were deleted successfully, continue with step 7. If the summary window states that the files cannot be deleted as they are in use, restart the computer (to stop and restart the print spooler), and then continue with step 2 above.

  7. Click on [Close] to close the Server Properties window.
  8. Close the Printers, Printers and Faxes, or Devices and Printers window.
  9. Restart the computer to make sure all driver files and Registry entries are deleted.
