Verify the Printer's Power Source and Isolate the Printer

Check the power source the printer is plugged into:

  • Plug the printer directly into another, known-to-be-good, wall outlet as a test. If too many devices are using one circuit breaker, temporary brownouts can occur at the printer. For testing purposes, do not plug the printer into a surge protector, power strip or uninterruptable power supply (UPS). If the power-up problem only occurs when the printer is plugged into the surge protector, power strip, UPS or one specific outlet, then the problem is with that device or outlet. Also make sure that both ends of the power cord are plugged in all the way.

    NOTE: Disconnect devices that share the same AC power circuit (circuit breaker) that contain heaters or motors that cycle on and off. For example, laser printers, copiers, coffee pots, or space heaters. When these types of devices are activated, they may cause a brief power brownout (voltage sag), which can cause the printer to fail its power-on test.

  • If the printer started power cycling (powering off and on) after a power surge from an electrical storm or a power outage, power the printer OFF and unplug the printer's power cord for at least one minute. Once this time has elapsed, plug the power cord into a stable power source and power the printer ON. If the printer still does not power up properly, service will be needed to resolve the problem.

    NOTE: Be sure the power source is valid and stable, and if possible, monitor the line voltage. Avoid plugging the printer into a UPS or surge protector, especially if unsure of the power rating.

Isolate the printer:

Networks and peripheral devices can cause a wide range of unusual symptoms. To verify the problem experienced isn't being caused by the printer, perform the following steps.

  1. Power the printer OFF and disconnect all cables from the printer, except for the power cord.
  2. Power the printer ON and check behavior.
  3. If the problem persists, service will be needed.
  4. If the printer does power up properly, power the printer OFF, connect in one of the cables, then power the printer ON. If the printer does not power up properly, the problem is with the cable, network, or peripheral. Repeat this process of elimination with the other cables to determine the source of the printer not powering up properly.
